individual therapy

My approach in therapy is eclectic as I typically use a range of evidence-based therapeutic approaches to help individuals meet their goals.  I work with each individual client collaboratively in order to determine which approaches might enable them to effectively meet their goals.  Approaches that I use include:

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) – helps people learn new ways to think in order to change unhelpful behaviour
  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – helps people manage intense emotions by learning how to accept and/or change thoughts, feelings, and emotions
  • Brief Solutions Focused Therapy (BSFT) – concentrates on the goals of the future and how to achieve them rather than delving into the past and reasons that bring people to therapy
  • Narrative Therapy – emphasizes the power of peoples’ life stories and separates people from their problems which allows them to utilize their personal skills in order to minimize their problems
  • Framework – whatever therapeutic approach I use with clients, the therapeutic framework is client-centred, strengths-based, and trauma informed

Should you choose to participate in individual counselling, we will have a discussion and collaboratively determined which needs and goals you want our psychotherapy therapy sessions to primarily focus on.  Overall, the ultimate goal of therapy is to help you meet your individual goals so that you no longer need the consistent support of a psychotherapist.

Face-to-face and Virtual Counselling

For individual counselling sessions, you have the option of face-to face counselling or virtual counselling. I offer secure and confidential virtual counselling for people who find it difficult to always come into the office for a therapy session.  Sometimes travel or work make it impossible to attend in person and fortunately, there is the online option during these times.

The online platform that I use, zoom.us, is secure, confidential, and it is compliant with Canadian Data Protection regulations, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).  PIPEDA (enacted in 2000) is a Canadian federal privacy law for private sector business.  It sets rules for how businesses must handle personal data in the course of commercial activity.  PHIPA (enacted in 2004) is a provincial legislation (Ontario) that protects the confidentiality and privacy of Personal Health Information (PHI) by establishing rules for the collection, use, and disclosure of PHI during the provision of healthcare.
